The project

Coastal and quarry regeneration, transforming the Varadero-Cantera void into a living and accessible urban fabric.

The "Resurfacing Horizons" project focuses on Santa Pola (ES), a municipality located between two contrasting natural systems: the Salinas, to the west, and the rocky Sierra, to the east. The central objective is to transform the spatial, economic and social void of the Varadero-Cantera area, recovering its latent potential and integrating it with ecological processes and cultural memory. This renovation seeks to turn the site into a strategic center within the Alicante-Elche-Santa Pola territorial network.

The strategy is based on three principles: reduce land use through reactivation of existing structures, reuse coastal materials and infrastructure, and recycle natural waste to turn it into landscape resources. The waterfront is transformed into a main axis for pedestrians and cyclists, including the new Plaza de las Palmeras. The Varadero, a former industrial and shipyard void, merges memory and future into a continuous and dynamic landscape. For its part, the disused quarry is reinterpreted as a vertical public space or "open-air museum", reactivating its old extraction ramps as pedestrian paths and viewpoints.

These light interventions prototype a resilient strategy that unites Santa Pola's landscapes through a habitable and shared coast.

Jury evaluation

The project approaches the site from the public space point of view and explores, in an interesting way, the idea of a linear park that finally extends to the entire site. From the beach and its dune cordon to the waterfront and its square, passing through the gentle path and the circular park that extends to the lower quarry, and then through the suspended route in the upper quarry to reach the heights of the Sierra, this project brings together the different environments of the site. However, it is very succinct regarding transformation processes and the management of natural dynamics.
